In Ayurveda sleep is considered as one of the 3 Pillars of a healthy and harmonious life. Ayurveda has some helpful nighttime rituals stored up in its sleeve that ensure a deep relaxing sleeping experience. So if you are suffering from insomnia or lockdown has messed up your sleep schedule, Try the following Ayurveda rituals to unwind with ease.
Decrease Stimulation
Your daily activity will have an impact on the quality of your sleep. So, try to decrease stimulants, and dim the lights to create a peaceful sleep environment. Don’t drink coffee or anything with caffeine after 4 pm. Also, turn off your screens (computers, televisions, tablets) and try not to look at your phone for an hour before you start winding down for bed. 

A Relaxing Warm Bath

A soothing bath before bedtime help remove the day’s residue, relaxes the muscles, and promotes better sleep. Try to add essential oils of Lavender, Rose, Jasmine, or Cedarwood when drawing your bath. In Ayurveda, these essential oils are said to offer a relaxing aroma-therapeutic experience that reduces stress and purifies negative emotions.

Pranayama: Alternate Nostril Breathing 

 Alternate Nostril Breathing is a simple yet intense breathing exercise that quickly relaxes movement in the mind. Before going to sleep sit comfortably on your bed, close your left nostril and inhale through the right one. Then exhale through the left nostril closing the right side. Repeat with alternate sides 10 to 15 times. This simple breathing technique relieves tension in the body and calms your nervous system. 

Drink Warm Milk with A Touch of Saffron and Nutmeg

In the theories of Ayurveda, warm milk is considered to be a healing and soothing tonic. A glass of warm milk with 1/8 teaspoon of nutmeg before bed works as an effective sleep aid. You can also add a pinch of saffron which promotes sound sleep and help with depression.

Massage Your Temples and Naval with Warm Oil or Ghee

In Ayurveda, Ghee is considered one of the best substances for Ayurvedic oil saturation therapy and self-massage. Massaging your temples and naval with ghee or warm sesame oil relaxes your body and provides hydration. 

The best hours to sleep are from 10 pm until 6 am. So, try to follow this sleep schedule and practice these simple nighttime rituals to enter into a state of relaxation before drifting off into dreamland.
